Dear Patient,

Can diet soda make you fat?

Hard to believe, but diet soda may actually contribute to weight gain, instead of preventing it. According to Marcelle Pick, an OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner, many women view diet soda as a healthy alternative to regular soda. “Diet soda may not have the sugar or calories of regular soda, but it’s chock full of other health-draining chemicals, like caffeine, artificial sweeteners, sodium, and phosphoric acid.” Artificial sweeteners may interact with our body’s sense of sugar satisfaction, confusing our taste buds and all those measures of satiety upon which we base what we eat. The result: Cravings go up, and so does calorie intake. One study showed a 41% increased risk of obesity for drinkers of diet soda drinkers vs. those drinking regular soda. Americans as a population are the number one consumers of soft drinks and of artificial sweeteners. It’s no surprise that we also have the highest rate of obesity in the world. The Fall: Season of the Lung

The make it through cold and flu season this year, be sure to pay attention to your lungs. According to Chinese medical theory, the lungs are closely associated with the emotions of grief and sadness and are affected by extreme temperatures like hot and cold. Frequent colds, and fall allergies are symptoms of lung weakness. If you are person whose cold goes “directly to your chest” you must pay special attention to your health this season. Here’s how Chinese Medicine views the lungs:

Season: Fall
Affected by emotions: Grief, sadness
Symptoms: Frequent colds, allergies, asthma, skin itching, sweating problems.

Treated appropriately, a cold need not derail you. Acupuncture can shorten the course of a cold by 50%, and herbs can stop a cold dead in its tracks. More importantly, herbs can prevent a cold from ever entering your chest. So take care this season. If think you’re getting sick, don’t go for the NyQuil and Sudafed- medications that only prolong your cold- give me a call instead.

Herbal spotlight: Astragalus

The herb known as huang qi in Chinese herbalism is terrific at supporting the immune, system, increasing energy, supporting a weak digestive system, and even preventing prolapse or organs. Additionally it is used to treat excessive sweating and to help urinary difficulties. In my clinic, I most frequently use it to support the immune system and to help people prevent colds and flus. When combined with just a few herbs, I can create a potent immune boosting formula. This formula is available to my patients in two separate formulas from Secara herbs: Herbal Immunity Boost- Astragalus 5, and Yu Ping Feng San Plus (used to prevent colds, and to treat allergies). The latter can be taken long term and is much better than Airborne® at treating early-stage cold and flu. If you are interested in either of these products, please contact me.

Acupuncture more effective than placebo in treating osteoarthritis of the knee

A recent study (Berman, 2004) , published in The Annals of Internal Medicine, compared acupuncture to a credible sham and concluded that acupuncture provides improvement in function and pain relief as an adjunctive therapy for osteoarthritis of the knee. The study included 570 patients with a mean age of 65.5 yrs. +/- 8.4 yrs. Patients were either given six 2-hour sessions over 12 weeks or 23 sham acupuncture sessions over 26 weeks. Read more…
